Shaba and Samburu
Shaba and Samburu Game Reserves are two neighboring game reserves located in northern Kenya. They are part of the larger protected area known as the Samburu-Laikipia ecosystem, which is home to a diverse range of wildlife species and landscapes.
Shaba Game Reserve is the smaller of the two reserves, covering an area of approximately 239 square kilometers. It is named after the Shaba Hill volcanic formation and is characterized by rocky hills, riverine forests, and open savannahs. The reserve is home to a variety of wildlife species, including elephants, lions, leopards, hyenas, buffaloes, and numerous bird species.
Samburu Game Reserve, on the other hand, covers an area of approximately 165 square kilometers and is located on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. The reserve is known for its unique northern Kenya wildlife species, such as the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, beisa oryx, and gerenuk. Other common wildlife species in the reserve include elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs.
Both Shaba and Samburu Game Reserves offer excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, as well as a chance to experience the local Samburu culture. Visitors can go on game drives, guided walks, and cultural tours to learn about the customs and traditions of the Samburu people. The reserves also offer a range of accommodation options, from tented camps to luxury lodges, to suit all budgets and preferences.
When planning a safari in Shaba and Samburu, it’s essential to consider the best time to visit. The dry season, from June to October, is often preferred for wildlife viewing as animals tend to gather around water sources, making them easier to spot. However, the parks can be visited year-round, and each season has its own unique attractions.
Keep in mind that safari experiences can vary depending on the weather, the time of year, and animal movements. To ensure the best possible experience, it is advisable to book your safari through a reputable tour operator who has local knowledge and experience in organizing safaris in the region.
