Lake Magadi Day Tour Details
Lake Magadi is a saline lake in the Kenyan Great Rift Valley. Its the southernmost lake in Kenya approximately 100sq kms and is located in a semi desert area. Several streams of both hot and cold water flow into the lake. The hot water heavily impregnated with soda. The spring water gush up through the caked crust dyeing the waters a vivid pink. Lake Magadi is well known for its wading birds, including flamingos and Pelicans. Flamingoes are unique. They breed in extreme habitats and feed in various species of algae thus they thrive in waters with very high concentrations of salt.
NB: Lake Magadi an ideal spot for watching flamingoes and Olorgesailie: A pre- historic site world renowned as the “factory of stone tools” During the dry season, the lake is mainly covered by soda-sodium carbonate.
Lake Magadi and Olorgesailie Day Trip
Depart from Nairobi in the morning 0630hrs through Magadi Rd Kiserian before we descend over the escarpment Kona Baridi view point for photos and views across the Great Rift Valley. Then descend over the Ngong Hills, continuing south into a semi-arid landscape, where we stop mid-morning at the Olorgesailie Prehistoric Site.
After a Guided tour of the site and learning about the previous inhabitants of the area, we continue onto Lake Magadi. via the Magadi town and past the Magadi Soda factory. We Enter the Lake Magadi reserve area and continue onto the hot springs where we stop for lunch and wading in the hot alkaline water springs (if the weather is not too hot) -sit in and soak in the hot mineral water. Afterward your skin feels so soft and smooth; until it dries then you turn a chalky white. Later proceed to Lake Magadi Sports club for Nyama Choma lunch and an afternoon is spent swimming at the Sports club swimming pool. Later leave for Nairobi arriving in the evening.
